Tom Cross

Tom Cross was well known as a painter, teacher and writer. He regularly exhibited his work after graduating from the Slade in the mid 1950's, as well as holding a number of educational positions culminating in Principal of Falmouth School of Art 1976-87.

Following retirement from Falmouth he continued to write, lecture and paint. One of his most important achievements was the publication of Painting The Warmth Of The Sun (first published in 1984), a book about the St Ives Modernist period that helped prepare the ground for the founding of the Tate Gallery in St Ives which opened in 1993.

Tom died in 2009 in Cornwall. His wife Pat continued to promote his work and set up the Tom Cross Archives with Falmouth University donating the majority of his sketch books and works which are on display in the campus. Pat passed away in 2022.

The collection is now owned and managed by their son David and his wife Carol who are keen to promote and collate the extensive collection which is housed mainly in Cornwall.

Anyone interested in acquiring works, seeking validation on works that they own or seeing the collection is most welcome to contact David or Carol by email tomcrossart@outlook.com or 07967 555617.

Here, we celebrate his journey through a life of art.
