Painted 7th May 1954 during Cross' time at the Slade School of Art in London. Under the tutelage of Claude Rogers, Cross worked alongside many of the leading British artists of the time including Ceri Richards, Patrick Heron John Piper, Henry Moore and many others: 'the presence of these remarkable people opened up a whole lot of directions' (Helford: A River and Some Landscapes Halsgrove 2005, p128)

Cross married Patricia Carrick in 1957.
