Acrylic and Oil on Canvas, Painted January 1969. During this time, Tom's early training as an architect came to dominate his work, with a particular interest in the interplay between light, space and geometry, initially inspired by Baroque churches he encountered during his travels in Italy. This culminated in the pivotal Lightworks exhibition of 1971-2. In this piece, what at first appear to be an abstract arrangement of shapes, may be seen as a fluid exploration of a cube, viewed from various angles while in motion - i.e - having been thrown.
From 'Recent Paintings' Exhibition Catalogue: 'The paintings in this exhibition are concerned with an investigation of architectural space. They derive initially from the experience of 17th Century Architecture, particularly domes and ceilings of Roman Baroque Churches...These spacial paintings lead ...to an examination of the three dimensional companion of the hexagon, that is to say the cube, and to an investigation of the spatial tensions that exist when a series of cubic networks are pictured in movement'.
