Because of my absence from London I believe that I was less affected than some of my contemporaries by the new American painting but the scale of these paintings and the freedom to find abstract form from the visual world can be seen in a number of my paintings in subsequent years, such as 'Red Landscape'. This an analogy of landscape in which the sweep of a brush and the spread of paint can take on the forms of landscape without being dependent upon detailed description. Another even more gestural and totally abstract is 'Yellow and Two Reds', both are dated 1964.
