Likely completed during Cross' time at Manchester School of Art. 'a quiet, easy-going sort of place; it gave me time to find a direction and to experiment' (Helford: A River and Some Landscapes, Halsgrove, 2005, p127). During this period Cross lived at 3 Percy Road, Denton.

While at Manchester Cross completed many studies of street scenes, which can be seen in his sketchbooks housed within the Tom Cross Archive at Falmouth University.
