Interior of a Room, 1962

Completed at the close of Cross’ time working for the Arts Council in Wales, this dominant piece is typical of Cross’ style in this period: structured, yet fluid, and heavily influenced by his time at both the Slade and Manchester School of Art, where Cross initially enrolled to train as an architect before later switching to Fine Art. Original sketches allow us to interpret the piece as a domestic setting, with Cross overlaying colour, shape and light to produce a bold reinterpretation of the space.

Interior of a Room is also characteristic of Cross’ methodology in completing large works, where he would often produce a small study or test piece in advance.
