Still Life with Fountain

SOLD

Signed and dated bottom left.

Completed following a trip to Italy in 1990.

'Monday 1 Jul. After a visit to London for the AGM of the Chelsea Arts Club , back to work. Two large gouaches need more work....Drawing not OK. Weak in the lower left and the fountain is not recognisable. Also formality is out of place. Practically wilts the last group of colours applied - lemon yell & mid yell and darkest blue'. (Tom Cross Archive, Sketchbook, 1990, FCP3/B/1/30)

Featured in 'Helford: A River and Some Landscapes' (Halsgrove, 2005), p101.

'As an alternative to landscape I have also often used still life as subject. The forms that I use are simple, a few well-known jugs, mugs and beakers on a table. Their familiar contours set up a resonance with each other and they are instantly familiar by their outline' 'Helford: A River and Some Landscapes' (Halsgrove 2005), p92.

Exhibited at 'Tom Cross - Paintings from the Artist's Studio', Belgrave Gallery, St Ives, Cornwall, October 2023.
