'The offer of a third postgraduate year at the Slade was particularly welcome for it opened up new horizons and brought the opportunity for me to travel and to live abroad...With friends from the Slade over several summers we were centered on the provincial town of Recanati and the Italian landscape became a subject for my work' A River and Some Landscapes, p129.
