Painted during Cross' first visit to Italy, in August - September 1955.

'The offer of a third post-graduate year at the Slade was particularly welcome for it opened up new horizons and brought the opportunity for me to travel...During the summer vacation of 1955 I made the first of a series of trips to Italy. I came to know particularly the area of the Marche, the old Papal Provinces to the east of Rome' (Helford: A River and Some Landscapes, Halsgrove 2005, p129).
