Manchester
Tom was born in Manchester in 1931 and educated at St Bedes Roman Catholic College in Manchester. On leaving school he was apprenticed to the architects Thomas Worthington & Son in Manchester.
In 19449 he trained at the Manchester School of Art where he was awarded the Proctor scholarship, the Plummer Scholarship, the Silver medal for painting of the Royal Manchester Institution and gained the National Diploma in design. He was a founder member of the Northern Young Artist Association and first met LS Lowry when he approached him on behalf of the Association to become its President. They remained friends until Lowry's death in 1976.
